Geocache Description:

“OHIO SPIRIT QUEST ”

The Ohio Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by Buckeye Pioneers. This series is inspired by and a continuation of the Indiana Spirit Quest caches created by Six Dog Team. In just over three years, the SPIRIT QUEST has grown to over 550 caches, with the hiding teams growing as well. The Ohio Spirit Quest has begun to grow with seven current hides in one Northwest Ohio county, with four current caching teams, three each with A Man and His Dog... and one with A Woman and her Dog. Over 1,000 cachers have logged over 25,000 finds. One cache machine found 111 ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours only).

Come with us now for a virtual tour of this old burial ground via this page, then go out and find the cache!

OHIO SPIRIT QUEST #004

”Revenge of the Hoosiers"

This is our fourth Ohio cache. Listen to what the SHADOW has to say:

Welcome to Billingstown Cemetery,(est. 1843) Northwest Township, Williams County, Ohio.

Welcome to Billingstown Cemetery, Northwest Township, Williams County , Ohio.

This is a mid size cemetery. It is old, but still moderately active. The main part is set well back from the present roadway, with the road frontage for new burials. Possibly, some buildings were near the roadway years ago, occupying the now vacant area.

Civil War veterans’ graves are numerous here. There are not so many modern war veterans graves, simply due to the low number of recent burials.

I found an unusual placement of two Civil War veterans’ government markers. Both bear the same surname and are side by side: William & George Gore. They are placed on the south side, near the edge. They are facing north, instead of the usual east. They're purposeful placements, as they are quite well seated into cement bases. I'm really curious as to the reason for that.

There are at least two Civil War soldiers memorialized here that died during the war: Jefferson B. Slaybaugh (Oct 11, 1864) and William W. Lee (Mar 20, 1864). .---THE SHADOW
