Geocache Description:

The Pillars of Hercules are some well-known natural columns that guard the entrance to English Harbour.

This cache is one of three caches placed near English Harbour. But they are in very differing locations and it is not easy to go from one to another.

It is possible to reach the base of the Pillars of Hercules by land. From Galleon Beach (where you can park – though you may have to do so outside the resort), follow the waterline up to the headland that sticks out towards Fort Berkeley on the other side of the entrance to English Harbour. On this headland, you should find some remains of Fort Charlotte. The main remains of Fort Charlotte are further up the hill – though there is not much left. Fort Charlotte was a navy placement – unlike the fort at Shirley Heights at the top of the hill behind which was an army structure.

At some time in the history of Antigua the navy used a submerged boom across the entrance of English Harbour, between Fort Berkeley and Fort Charlotte. This could help protect against unwelcome invading boats but could be lowered as required.

There is now a trail (Carpenter Trail) through the ruins on the headland that then passes up the hill to Shirley Heights.

The cache is about 10 feet from the trail, just after it turns left up the hill. But the cache cannot be seen from the trail. Instead you must come from the shoreline. It is about 25 feet above sea-level and 75 feet from the beginning of the Pillar of Hercules. The cache is in a crevice under an overhanging rock. The crevice is guarded by some loose stones.

Do make sure you actually visit the Pillars of Hercules which are dramatic rock formations just a little bit further than the cache. They are reached by climbing over the rocks at sea level till you get to a wide ledge.
