(Now for the History Lesson) Centennial Race Track was dubbed the Santa Anita of the Rockies when it opened for horse racing on Nearly 10,000 people passed through the gates waging a half a million dollars on that opening Independence Day. The property was sold for $17.7 million in 1981. This was more than one hundred times the original $160.000 price of the Hazard Ranch in 1949. Racing continued while the new owner got building permits for apartment and condos. The last race was on November 6, 1983 after some 23,000 races. The property is now known as the Centennial Downs at South Federal and Belleview. (History of Littleton ) The NEW ‘horse’ track is called Arapahoe Park and is located in Aurora. It opened in 1984 for only one year before going bankrupted. After being closed for over a decade the Park reopen in May of 1992 to a crowd of 11,146 people. In 2005 the Arapahoe Park opened June 10 and will runs races every Friday-Sunday until August 28, 2005. Many Drive By Mugglers -- Be fast and careful. If you are lucky, you can park 8-10 feet away.
