THE OLDER BOULDER Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

TWST: I think this cache has run it's course for me. The area has been developed and it's getting harder to keep a cache secure in this location. If anyone would like to take over the cache, let me know.

Geocache Description:

Discover the “older boulder” hidden in the forest of Semiahmoo Trail Park.

The city of White Rock was named after the most noticeable landmark in the area, a massive white 486-ton boulder that lies on the beach just east of the pier. Deposited by glacial action and frequently painted white to keep it looking pristine, the rock's arrival on the shore is the source of many colourful First Nations' legends. Native legend has it that the rock marks the spot where the Transformers, emissaries of the Sagalie Tyee, the Creator, once passed. Another legend holds that the white rock marks the landing spot of a stone that was hurled across the Strait of Georgia by a young Indian chief. It was said that he and his bride moved there from Vancouver Island to make a home together.

The older boulder, hidden in the forest of Semiahmoo Trail Park, is not quite as large as its more famous counterpart down on the beach, but it’s definitely easier to climb. Decide for yourself which rock you think is older, but keep in mind that this one has never had a facelift!

When geocachers WW-M&M found this cache a while ago, they bumped into some local residents who gave them some interesting background about this boulder: "You may have noticed that there appear to be some large sections chiseled out of the rock. These sections apparently had some native drawings and when the area was developed, about 20 years ago, the City of Surrey carved them out so that they would not be defaced. We don't know where those original native drawings are kept but it sure adds another level of interest to this older boulder."

(As another side note, this area appears to be frequented by teens so be sure that you are alone before attempting to retrieve the cache and rehide the cache as you found it. Probably best to do this one during the daytime.) Happy hunting!
