Grand Circus Park
-- the gateway between Detroit's Business and Theater Districts --
was founded in 1850 and remains a vital part of downtown life
today. Once a main public gathering place, this park underwent a $2
million renovation recently, to become more pedestrian friendly. On
the northern edge of the park there are statues of former Detroit
Mayors Hazen S. Pingree and William C. Maybury. The park features
summer concerts, which are advertised in the newspaper and are free
to the public.
The Millennium Bell was commissioned by the City of Detroit to
ring in the new millennium. The sounding of this triangular-shaped
bell has become a New Year's Eve tradition. The ten-ton bell hangs
from arches that stretch 40 feet across and stand 26 feet tall. The
bell was created by artist Chris Turner and was dedicated on
December 31, 1999.
