Eveleth, MN is considered to be the HOME OF AMERICAN ICE HOCKEY, which is the theme of this cache. You are standing in HOCKEY PLAZA-white concrete represents ice, with a “face off circle” under the puck and red center line. The fence resembles rink boards. On September 16, 1995- the park was dedicated to the “hockey players of the past, present, and future and to the spirit of hockey in Eveleth." According to the WORLD LARGEST ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS record (2002), this is the largest HOCKEY STICK in the world .In 2002, it replaced the original 1995 stick which sat on the same spot. It is 110 ft. long, and weighs 10,000 pounds (5 tons). It was built by Sentinel Structures Inc. of Peshtigo, WI. It took 4 hrs, to truck it here with a full Hwy. Patrol escort and traffic being re-routed to the shoulders of the roads to make room for the stick to pass. The puck is original from 1995. It measures 5 ft x 20 ins. And weighs 700 pounds. There is also a mural across the street that shows boys playing hockey.

The next stop can be found at these coordinates: N47 27. A60 W092 32.4B3 A = The number of “fins” on the base of the tallest support pedestal. B = The number of black canister type lights around the concrete “ice” minus 4. Make sure you read the plaque next to the statue of John Mariucchi.

At these coordinates you will find the BIRTHPLACE OF AMERICAN HOCKEY lovingly called “THE OLD HIPP.” At the time it was built, in the 1920’s, for the powerful Eveleth Reds Hockey team, this structure was regarded as the “Madison Square Garden of the Northland ” and was the third ice hockey rink ever built in the USA. The original wooden structure, which seated 3,000 people, cost $50,000.00 to build. In 1938, it was renovated and expanded with brick replacing the wooden walls at a cost of $150,000.00. The rink was natural ice until artificial ice was installed in 1950. In 2002, there was another expansion for more locker rooms and coach rooms. If you are there and it is open, go in and take a peak at the arena and the trophies and pictures on display. We enjoyed attending hockey games here as high school students when our Duluth East Greyhounds traveled here for games. GOOOOOO HOUNDS!

The cache can be found at these coordinates: N47 28.C69 W092 31.D87 C = The number of "H's" in the name above the main entrance on the east side of the Hipp. building. D = The number of entry doors on the east side plus 1.

The cache is located near the US HOCKEY HALL OF FAME. “Eveleth was given this designation because no other community of its size has produced as many quality players or has contributed more to the growth and development of the sport in the US.” Inside the building are exhibits of hockey memorabilia and hockey player legends. A visitor can see films of great hockey moments such as the men’s Miracle on Ice (1990 Olympics), the women’s gold medal victory at the 1998 Olympics, or see the scoreboard from the Mighty Ducks movie. The museum will be opening under new sponsorship of USA HOCKEY, Memorial Day 2007. It is good to be able to keep this hockey icon in Northern Minnesota. When a player scores 3 goals in a game it is called a HAT TRICK.
