Geocache Description:

You will need SCUBA gear to locate this cache 30 feet below the surface of Hathaway's Pond.

Hathaway’s Pond is a popular SCUBA training site on Cape Cod and we have placed what we believe is New England’s first underwater cache on the wreck of the “Field and Sea”, a 35’ cabin cruiser that was sunk here for divers to enjoy. The coordinates given are for the buoy marking the wreck.

To claim your find, locate the flat waterproof container tethered to the starboard porthole frame inside the forward cabin of the wreck. You do not need to open the container. Just read the code letters that show through the clear sleeve. You should be able to reach the cache from the main cabin and a dive light will be helpful. Just e-mail us the code along with the agency and number shown on your SCUBA C-card for confirmation before posting your find. Please do not include any "spoiler" information in your log entry.

In addition to the “Field and Sea” there are other artifacts scattered about the bottom of the pond. This underwater tour will visit the main training platform, a lawn tractor, and a Saab 99 automobile that fell through the ice long ago.

If you need to rent tanks or other gear, the two closest dive shops that rent equipment are Aqua Center in Sandwich and Diver's Market in Plymouth:

For non-divers, Hathaway’s Pond is a 94-acre conservation area with swimming, hiking trails, picnicking, and access for non-motorized watercraft and our Scuba Schools I cache is also located here. The Town of Barnstable charges a fee for daytime parking during the summer, but by visiting early or during the evening, you can avoid the “tolls”. Please note that dogs are not welcome from May 15 to September 15.

Divers usually park at one of these locations:
N 41 40.990 x W70 18.641 or N 41 40.966 x W70 18.673

Enjoy!

Underwater Guide:

Most divers should be able to complete this tour on one tank of air, but use good judgment and be on the surface with 500 lbs left in your tank. Please note that during the summer, divers must remain outside the swimming area ropes.

The best spot to enter the water at the extreme right side of the swimming area. N 41 40.985 x W 70 18.700. If you can’t enter here, it’s easy to spot the location before suiting up and snorkel over to start your dive.

From the beach, descend and swim a course of 350 degrees. At about 8 feet, you should find an underwater stonewall that will lead you to the main training platform at a depth of @ 20 feet.

A lawn tractor is usually located about 50 feet from the platform on a bearing of 300 degrees. It gets a lot of attention from divers learning to use lift bags and moves around a bit.

From the platform turn right and follow the 25 foot contour about 50 yards to the sunken Saab. This wreck is quite rusty, watch out for sharp metal edges.

From the Saab, swim a bearing of 30 degrees across the pond until you rise to 25 feet again. Turn left and follow the 25-foot contour until you reach the Field & Sea. There is a buoy to mark the wreck.

From the boat, reverse your 30-degree heading and return across the pond. You should surface near the swimming area.
