This multi-cache centres around Falmer Pond located just South of the Brighton bypass (A27) and hinges on solving of a set of clues which can be found very close to the pond and which will provide the co-ordinates of a nearby 35 mm film can containing the co-ordinates of the final cache hidden a few hundred yards from the pond.
Falmer must have been a sleepy little village before the building of the bypass and the Brighton and Sussex universities. The pond still remains a pleasant and relatively peaceful haven from the hustle and bustle of its near neighbours. It is edged by sarsen stones collected many years ago from the surrounding countryside and is inhabited by quite a few ducks and other water fowl which appreciate being fed by visitors.
Parking is available on the road around the pond at the above co-ordinates, although this is used by students and staff of the nearby Brighton University and can therefore be a little crowded during university hours. The clues can all be found by looking closely at the benches facing the pond itself which will enable you to locate the 35 mm film can which is hidden at:
N 50° AB.CDE W 000° FG.HIJ
The film can contains only a piece of paper with the co-ordinates of the final cache. Please ensure that this is left for future cachers and that the can lid is firmly on to keep it dry.
1. The number of letters in Anastasia’s surname multiplied by 2 is C. The month of her birth minus the month of her death is D.
2. The number of letters of Mrs Geal’s first name is A. The last digit of the year she died is B.
3. Find a giant of a man. The number of letters of his first name minus the number of letters of his middle name is F. The number of letters of his surname divided by 2 is G.
4. The third digit of the year Ethel Peck was born is I. How old was Ethel when she died? The last digit is J.
5. Finally, find the 2 Robinsons. The day Dave died divided by 3 is E. The number of “E”s in their first names added together and multiplied by 2 is H
Hopefully, by now you will have walked around halfway around the pond and will have all the numbers you need to punch in the co-ordinates of the film can which is very close.
The final cache, which is a 1 litre sandwich box containing an FTF certificate, logbook, pen and some goodies, is hidden just a few hundred yards from the pond up a licensed path along a field edge. Gloves might be a good idea to avoid nettle stings.
This cache is one of a pair in the Falmer area. The other, “Falmer Hill”, is within a mile’s walking distance of this cache, although closer parking is available if you’re not feeling that energetic.
