Geocache Description:

An ammo can hidden in the wilds of Williams Island, an island in the James River in Richmond, Virginia.

Have you ever been on Williams Island? Located within the city limits of Richmond, Virginia, this wild and overgrown island is home to deer and beaver and lots of other critters. While bushwhacking around in the woods it's difficult to believe that you are actually in the city. And you might not be alone. I have seen signs of humans there: discarded cans, an old glowstick hanging from a tree, cut pieces of bamboo lashed together with string forming a crude lean-to. Ruins, too. There's an old well and something that looks like it might have been a fireplace. But there are no trails leading to the interior of the island, so it doesn't matter much where you come ashore -- you will be bushwhacking to reach the cache. I recommend that you use a boat to reach the island. I believe that is the easiest and safest way to get there. I put in at the Huguenot Woods parking & launch area. It is on the right bank of the river (directions on the river are given as if you are looking downriver) just upriver from the Huguenot Bridge. CAUTION: On each side of the island there is a dam connecting it to the mainland. There are warning signs on the island and on the river banks. Stay away from the dams! Every year people die ignoring this advice. Please don't be one of them. There is a clearly marked portage on the right side of the island that you can use to easily and safely bypass the dam if you want to paddle downriver of it. Because this really should be done with a boat, I have given it a terrain rating of 5. The bushwhacking contributes to the high rating, too. It should be easy to find for all but the most inexperienced of cachers. It's hidden in an obvious place; I just didn't want the muggles to stumble upon it. Want to know what you're playing for? For the First Finder there is a cap from Groundspeak -- the black one with the reflective logo. There is also a 4-pack of rechargeable AA batteries, a geocaching logo patch, a couple of glowsticks, and some other stuff. Oh yeah, and a camera. This is not for trade. Please take your picture and note which number it was. I'll retrieve it when it's full or when cold weather is approaching and post the pics.
