Five lonely crofts on West Rannoch Moor were troubled by the Witch of Beinn a' Bhric.
Changing shape, she could appear as a Cat, meowing, a Hen, scratching or as a Raven on the roof, watching and waiting.
She would wither the crops, sour the milk, turn the butter rancid or often steal the best milk-cow.
One night she stole the best milk-cow of Angus nan Ainean, crofter of Cruaiche. (See 'An Duine Mor-Tigh na Cruaiche' GCNKDA) Not for the first time he had suffered from this witch. He searched high and low for the cow and witch. Eventually, miles from his croft he found his cow, much emaciated, in a small enclosure. As he got closer, he heard the cackling voice of the witch. His anger getting the better of him, he killed the witch and buried her beside the enclosure.
But he made the mistake of not burying her head downwards. So that when her corpse began to dig its way out, as sometimes happens with witches, it would dig into the earth and not the fresh air above.
Hence there is a depression in the ground where the earth has been thrown aside. Instead of the usual mound one would expect to find.
