Scurdie Ness Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Team Clova: We've had a few problems with this one- cows in the field and tides coming up higher and higher mean that there are not really any viable hiding places left. We may revisit this walk out to the lighthouse as there are a couple of interesting spots on the way that are crying out for a cache!

Geocache Description:

A walk from the once fishing village of Ferryden to Scurdie Ness lighthouse.

In 1867 the sea-faring community of Ferryden made representations to the Commissioners of Northern Lighthouses to have a light established on Montrose Point at the rock-bound shore stretching between the Bell Rock and Girdle Ness which had been the scene of numerous shipwrecks and great loss of life. The lighthouse was approved and and David and Thomas Stevenson were given the job of building it. On Tuesday 1 March 1870 at 1800 hours the tower was lit for the first time.

The walk to the cache will take you past several wartime pillboxes and other buildings. During the 2nd World War the lighthousekeepers job was added too immensley. At Scurdie Ness, not content with being the butt of the RAF for 'Lighting up' on naval instructions and so guiding the German Bombers in, one lightkeeper had to paint the whole tower black so that it would not also provide a day mark for the enemy!!!

As you continue your walk you will also pass the two original beacons, built in the 18th century. The East beacon close to the path and the West one down beside the shoreline.

Scurdie Ness was converted to automatic operation in 1987.

The cache is a small screw top container.

Parking is at N56 42.104 W002 27.442. From Parking co-ords follow the path close to the shoreline which will lead to wooden steps which take you up to the tarmac path leading to the lighthouse.
