The cache is located on the grounds of the Happy Jack Chalk Mine.
Happy Jack's Peak had served as a lookout post for both the Pawnee and Sioux Indian tribes long before white settlers came to this area-it's the highest elevation around. 'Happy Jack' Swearengen was a frontiersman who lived in a dugout/log hut on the side of this hill in the 1860s. He was a trapper, guide, and a government scout who was known for his honesty, cheerful disposition and willingness to help others; hence the nickname. The peak is QUITE A CLIMB on railroad tie stairs, but there is an easier climb up the back side. The climb is well worth it for the absolutely gorgeous view of the North Loup Valley. The grounds of the Chalk Mine are open from dawn to dusk-and you can also tour the mine during certain hours. The cache is a small container-be discreet! Information here was taken from NEBRASKA LIFE magazine-'Climbing Happy Jack Peak' by Judith Anthony.
