Canyon Dam was constructed from 1958 - 1963 and began to impound water in 1964It is a cooperative project that is jointly managed by the U. S. Army Coorps of Engineers and GBRA. As the Guadalupe river flows into the area behind the dam it creates Canyon Reservoir. This dual purpose project provides for storage of water and flood protection for people living down stream from the Dam. The reservoir covers more than 8,400 acres and stores about 386,000 acre feet of water. (Think of an acre of land covered one foot deep with water - this equils one acre foot). This hydro electric plant was built in 1989 and houses two generators. Each can produce 3 megawatts (3,000 kilowatts) of electricity or a total of 6 megawatts combined. This is a nice location with a lot of history. To read more about this place and hydro electricity go to www.gbra.org click on the news and info. link then annual reports, then hydro electric.
