Slash X Ranch Cafe
John “Jack” Waldon was a BLM ranger that knew the rocky terrain
of Barstow like the back of his hand. It is said: “there wasn't a
rock, or cactus he hadn't seen in his travels”.,P. Jack was well
known, well respected, and well liked by the off-roaders, and other
users of the public lands under his jurisdiction and believed that
public land really is for the public. Not just for the pleasures of
the elitist few. Jack was often at odds with the department over
the use of the land, “but there was very little in life that made a
man happier than driving through the desert, and seeing racers,
families, or even lone campers out there, enjoying the land that
he'd fought to keep free”.
The Checkers Off-Road Racing Team awarded Jack the highest honor
they can give to a non-Checker; The Vic VanElla Award, in 1999. See

Jack having a cold one at the Slash X
We were touched by the story and decided to hide this cache near
the memorial. Donna and I won this container, a camouflaged tube
about 3” X 12” fully stocked and ready to hide, at the Greater Palm
Springs Geocaching Event. The cache will only hold small items (see
cache contents picture).
First to find; look for the souvenir FTF agatee and Susan B
Anthony Dollor.
Any high profile vehicle can reach the cache. Four-wheel drive
is not necessary. One way to get there would be: Start at dirt road
N34 45.665 W117 00.622. Head northwest to N34 45.951 W117 00.923,
turn left to N34 45.753 W117 01.208, turn right then strait up the
hill to the cache.
As always use caution in the desert; never put your hand
where you can’t see.
Stop at the Slash X and say hello to owner Brian, where you can
get some great chow and cold beer. I know he is interested in your
find.
