Geocache Description:

All are welcome! Please join us for a family friendly weekend of camping and caching in the beautiful Huron-Manistee National Forest June 17th to 19th 2005.

This geo-camping weekend will take place at the Pine River National Forest Campground in Mikado Township, Alcona County. It is a small, secluded campground with the nearest town being Glennie, about 9 1/2 miles to the west. There are pit toilets and a well so prepare for rustic camping at it's finest.

If you are coming from the south take M-65 through Hale to Bissonette Rd and follow the signs to the campground. If you are coming from the north take M-65 to Glennie and turn east on F-30 and follow the signs to the campground. It is located on Rearing Pond Rd. Here are a few facts regarding this campground:

  • There are 11 campsites.
  • Camping is $10 a night.
  • Holders of Golden Age or Access Passports pay 1/2 nightly fee.
  • One family or up to 8 persons per site allowed.
  • Pack it in, pack it out. (trash)
  • Pets must be on a leash.
  • Reserving sites for others is not allowed and the campsite must be occupied the first night.
  • Quiet time is 10pm-6am.
  • You can bring your own firewood as long as it is not ash or any type of wood from a quarantined area.

This will be a very loosely organized event as the idea here is to relax and enjoy geocaching "up north style". Bring your fishing pole if you so desire. You will need to have a trout stamp. There are many acres to hike, see wildlife and just enjoy the great outdoors.

There are more caches planned for that area as the event gets nearer and this campground is within 11 miles of the infamous series The Seven Deadly Caches by victorymike and gvnagei.

We will be arriving early in the day on Friday to set up camp. Since this is a tiny campground and is first come, first serve, spots cannot be reserved. I would advise arriving early. Campsites cannot be held for others but I imagine doubling up if the sites fill up would work as long as the allowed number of campers per site is not exceeded.

Does everyone remember the story, Stone Soup?

"In a village in wartime people hide their meager food from invaders. A hungry soldier appears and asks for a pot to make stone soup. As curious villagers watch, he begins to boil stones. With a little sly coaxing the soldier-chef persuades each villager to share what has been hidden. One brings out a cabbage, another carrots. Onions and potatoes appear...."

If you would like to take part in our stone soup dinner on Friday evening, please bring something to add to our "stone soup". The basic beginnings will be provided, meat, spices, ect. Any kind of vegetable to add would be great, lets be creative and see what we come up with! There will be fresh bread to accompany it.

If you are not up to camping but wish to meet up with us for the day or the afternoon there is a Northern Michigan Geocachers picnic M&G planned for Saturday June 18th at noon at the campground. Please bring your table setting, beverage, something for you to cook on the grill and a dish to pass. This campground is approximately 32 miles from Alpena and 28 miles from Tawas. There will be a drawing at the M&G, please bring something for the prize table
