This area used to be owned by a mining company. Many of the big
guns used in the the World Wars were made with titanium mined in
Ponte Vedra Beach. At the time, it was known as Mineral City. The
company town included a golf course for the company executives.
When the mine played out, it was decided that the area would be
developed as a resort community with the golf course at it's heart.
Mineral City, not being very resortish, was thought to be an
inappopriate name. Rumour has it that on the day the Board of
Directors was discussing the matter, there was an article on the
front page of the Wall Street Journal about a town in Spain called
Ponte Vedra, which is Latin, for "Old Bridge". The name sounded
pretty, so it was chosen.
