Geocache Description:

Another Jared!

The cache cantainer is located in an area that can be very busy - according to Brush standards. So please be careful of mugglers. Also be sure that the container is 'locked' so moisture does not get in. (I hope) The cache is a magnetic key holder. You must bring your own pen to sign the log.

Jared Lamar Brush was born in Clermont County, Ohio on July 6, 1835 and died in Greeley, Colorado on April 24, 1913. He was married twice and had 7 children. He was a farmer, cattle raiser, and banker. He arrived in clear Creek County from Iowa in 1859. He engaged in prospecting from 1859-1860; ranching on the Big Thompson from 1860-1870; freighting with ox teams across the plains from 1861-1866; and developed early irrigation systems.

Jared served as Weld County Sheriff in 1871, and County Commisioner from 1874-1877. He became a representative of the General Assembly from 1879-1893. In 1896 he gave up stock raising from banking. He was a Republican and seved as Lieutenant Grovernor of Colorado from 1895-1899. Afterward he served as trustee of State Agricultural College from 1907-1913.

The City of Brush, Colorado was named in honor of Jared L. Brush, a Colorado cattle pioneer. Long before the town was founded, the site was a shipping point on the old Texas-Montana cattle trail, known as the Beaver Creek Station.

Mr. Brush never actually lived in the City of Brush. He helped settle what is now known as Greeley, Colorado, living there and visited Brush often.

He helped to organize the first rodeo in Brush on July 4, 1884 and brought a trainload of visitors from Denver to view the phenomenon. (information from the Colorado Lieutenant and Brush, Colorado web-sites)
