Actually, it is the James River Foot Bridge - a converted railroad bridge which is now for foot travel where the Appalachian Trail crosses the James River. But of course for those in the know, the bridge is named in memory of William T. (Bill) Foot making it a play on the word in the name. Check out the plaque at the end of the bridge. It was through Bill’s tireless efforts that funding was obtained to convert the old railroad bridge into the trail bridge. Before the bridge was finished, the AT curved eastward to Hwy 501 where hikers crossed the James River 501 bridge and then turned left along the shoulder of 501/130 to reach the trail turn-off. The bridge eliminated this route and its potential for accidents with the traffic.
Bill’s efforts can also be seen in many AT relocations, renovations and maintenance functions. The bike trails in Peaks View Park are also named for Bill due to his efforts in planning and building them. He was also involved in building and reconstructing many of the Blackwater Creek trails. Bill and his wife Laurie have hiked the entire Appalachian Trail as well as being the first to hike/bike the entire American Discovery Trail. For more information on this amazing man and his accomplishments, check out the Natural Bridge AT Club web site (www.nbatc.org) and click on the "Links" link.
Just beyond the bridge, the AT takes a scenic route along the banks of the James River before turning up Matts Creek. This is a pretty little creek which the AT crosses at the Matts Creek trail shelter. For those who want a little longer hike, the trail goes all the way to Springer Mountain, Georgia!
The cache is a magnetic key holder so bring your own pencil.
