The Evil Birch trail is in the Heart of a proposed park.
Halifax Regional Municipality's 25 year regional plan seeks to protect and establish a regional park in the area located across the Bicentennial Hwy. opposite Clayton Park West., and the lands between Kearney Lake. and Timberlea. The wilderness which includes 1,750 hectares of crown land, contains 22 lakes and ponds, wet lands, old growth forest, scenic vistas, and Metro's highest point of land - Blue Mountain.
This area is a popular spot for outdoor recreation, particularly hiking, mountain biking, swimming, and bird watching.
It is home to 200 different species of birds and Nova Scotia's endangered Moose believe it or not
The Birch Cove Lakes and Wilderness Society joined forces with the Halifax Field Naturalists, Halifax North West Trails Association, and the Ecology Action Centre last year, in calling on Provincial and Municipal Governments to formally protect the wilderness. The plan also proposes protecting a natural corridor between the Birch Cove Lakes and Coxs lakes Provencal Park near Timberlea.
