This small cache is located in the Oakwood Cemetery. The cache is a short walk from the driveway.
This missing microcache was replaced with a slightly larger container (3/19/08) and now contains a few small items.
Many of my family members are buried at Oakwood, and I grew up just 4 miles from here. So, we visit this cemetery every Memorial Day. I remember seeing my first tornado from here. It was on the hill to the northwest, and was quite a sight.
Sadly, another tornado came this way. On May 8, 2003, 9 tornadoes struck across eastern Kansas. A half-mile wide F2 tornado destroyed several homes across Anderson County, then crossed into Linn County. Oakwood Cememtery took a direct hit. Nearly every headstone was broken or toppled from it's base. The large trees were all destroyed.
The men of the Wall Street Christian Church took it upon themselves to put the cemetery back in order. They spent hundreds of man hours literally putting the pieces back together, resetting stones and removing debris. The job was mostly complete in time for Memorial Day a few weeks later.
As you walk through the cemetery you can still see the damage from the tornado: headstones that have been pieced together like puzzles, and those that no longer face due west. The cemetery looks like a different place without the big, old trees.
