The ferry to Rathlin Island leaves Ballycastle, Co. Antrim, for the 45 minute journey, four times daily from 1 June – end of September. It is essential to book the ferry in advance. Telephone 028 2076 9299. You don't have to do the round trip in one day. You can stay at the guest house, Hostel, camping barn or even pitch a tent.
The cache takes you on a 2 mile walk/cycle ride past Ushet Lough to Smuggler's cove and the South lighthouse. The walk starts on a surfaced road but most of it is unsurfaced. Wear sensible walking shoes.
In this area you can watch the colony of seals basking on the rocks and you can walk to the south lighthouse. On a clear day you can see Scotland and a great view of Fair Head. In days gone by pirates and smugglers had bases on Rathlin. This ruined house called ‘Smuggler's House' had cavities in the wall probably used for hiding contraband.
The cache is in a 6”x 8” tab lock plastic box. When placed it contained various swap items including some souvenirs of Rathlin Island .
