Geocache Description:

Raton's Historic Shuler Theater - 131 North Second Street. Elevation 6666

THE SHULER THEATER:

The Shuler Theater has been called Raton's "Crown Jewel" -- and for good reason. The opera house is now over 90 years old and is still an active venue for the performing arts in Northeastern New Mexico.

The Shuler is open weekdays from at least 9 to 5 and often on weekends as well. Visitors are always welcome and tours are free to anyone. Some things to be sure to see:

-- The lobby has a series of eight WPA murals in excellent condition showing the history of the settling of the region in and around Raton.
-- The theater has three of the original drop curtains. The front curtain shows the Palisades of the Cimarron, viewable on the North side of the highway as travelers drive from Raton, past Cimarron, and towards Taos. Be sure to look for the swastika symbols on the curtain -- a Native American symbol for good luck before it was used for a different purpose.
-- The theater has made substantial investment in the preservation of the original rococo-style ornamentation.
-- The theater has some interesting stories about some ghosts who might live here -- some people claim to have sighted both James Jackson Shuler (Raton's first doctor and mayor at the turn of the 20th century) and his daugher Evlyn Shuler (responsible for much of the restoration of the theater).

ABOUT THE TRADITIONAL CACHE:

With permission of the management of the Shuler Theater, I am placing a traditional cache. The cache is actually inside the building, in the lobby, so hunters will need to come when the building is open.

The cache will originally be filled with different goodies from the theater. There will be some good picks for the first to find this one.

If you find this cache you will definitely be "in the spot light."

ABOUT THE VIRTUAL CACHE:

Since I know not all hunters might be able to come during business hours, or might not want to come inside to look around, there is an alternative virtual cache.

You can email the answers to the following questions:

1. What words and date are on the cornerstone of the Shuler.
2. What date did you come by and what poster, sign, etc. was in the marquis outside the theater.

Also, please include your address if you would like the theater to send you a little prize (but this won't be as good as if you come in and find the cache).
