Geocache Description:

A small cache located along the Talimena Drive.

Castle Rock area displays a unique Ouachita Mountain feature, the 'dwarf forest'. The Ouachita Mountains run generally east-west, and often receives abundant moisture laden air from the Gulf of Mexico. In warm weather, this is not a problem, but when temperatures are at or below freezing, the Gulf moisture collects on the trees and freezes, causing ice buildup on branches and twigs. This is repeated often during cold months, resulting in the branches and twigs breaking off from the weight of the ice. The end result are trees that might only be 10-15 feet tall, but could in fact be well over a hundred years old.
This cache was placed in a scenic turnout that has outstanding examples of dwarf trees. Being a small cache, a pen is needed, and only small trade items are possible.
