It looks as if the words capitol and capital should have the same Roots, but these two supposed Synonyms are actually as different as zero and Zeno. Actually, capital has many Meanings, but they all derive in some way from the Latin Term caput which means head. Virtually spelled the same, capitol actually comes from Capitoline, the name of a hill. Ancient Rome actually had seven hills. This hill was the smallest in surface area but was the tallest in the city, and was chosen as One whose name would signify The Roman heritage of the architecture in our nation's new capital city. There is, of course, the possibility that capitoline is somehow a Variant of caput, but as far as their Inclusion into our language is concerned, their etymologies are distinct and Separate. Knowing this, it's still not clear to me the History of this avenue and expressway.
