MT Tom State Reservation. $2.00 entrance fee on weekends and holidays. Parking nearby in a lot or a nearby pulloff. Mild bushwacking. Its not too far from the route 5 entrance if the gate is locked.
Hemlocks on average grow to be about 60-70 feet tall and 2-3 feet around. This tree appears to be about 120 feet tall and 14 feet around and is 250-275 years old. Championship status is determined through height, circumference and crown size. Many old hemlocks still survive due to their little value as commercial lumber. The bark which contains tannin has been used to make a tea. If you can get a copy of: Driving and walking tour of MT. Tom State Reservation, at the vistor center, open on weekends, it gives a guidelines to 10 of the most interesting and unique spots in the park. The tree is #3 on map. One of the park guides I was talking to, told me about someone getting bit by a copperhead snake in the last couple of weeks. He got a ticket for trying to kill it!
