Geocache Description:

Parking Co-ordinates are N57 00.632 W002 27.383 a wide entrance at the top of a farm road. The cache is a short walk.

To reach the cache you will pass the stone circle known as The Nine Stanes. It was excavated in 1904 and found to have a 2m deep, funnel shaped central cairn containing cremated bones.

The circle has a recumbant stone flanked by two standing stones, one has fallen. This is apparently a unique feature of some stone circles in the North-east. The recumbant stone is thought to weigh over 16 tons.

There are another two stone circles nearby. They are on agricultural land but can be seen from further along the road. There have been many speculations about why these circles were built, from charting the moon and stars to marking celebrations and rituals. However the real reasons remain unknown.

The cache is a small plastic container. Absolutely no stones, especially ancient ones, need to be touched or moved to find it.
