Geocache Description:

Discover Reed City by GPS

Please join us in Reed City, Michigan, for a fun-filled geocaching event to take place during the Great American Crossroads Celebration: A Family Festival. Meet at 11 a.m., Sunday, August 21, at the listed coordinates.

Plan on a fun event! Please bring your own brown-bag meal, lawn chairs if you have them and something to write with. The day will start with socializing while we munch on our lunches and free yogurt donated by Reed City's own Yoplait. It’s your opportunity to finally meet the faces behind those geocaching nicknames. Then we’ll hit the roads and trails and cash in on some local virtuals marked especially for this event.

Each team will visit a portion of the 20 temporary virtuals. To download a PDF with the complete list of 20 ahead of time, visit http://www.reedcitycrossroads.com/tourism/festival/index.shtml, scroll down to the event listing on Sunday, then click on the link for Complete Coordinates. It's just for fun and not a race, so there's no need to scope out the sites ahead of time. Printed copies along with questions will be passed out at the event.

Be sure to bring any travel bugs you may want to trade. Everyone will leave home with a special souvenir event token.

Some experienced area geocachers have offered to place new caches in the region, so you're sure to find some new ones as you travel to or from Reed City.

Because the event is held in conjunction with the Great American Crossroads Celebration, there will be lots of fun activities to choose from the whole weekend: a parade (also a pet parade!), fireworks, 5k run, museum and church tours, concerts, a non-GPS old-fashioned scavenger hunt patterned after TV's Amazing RAce, this geo-event and lots more. Everything is open to everyone whether you live around Reed City or not. (Regularly updated festival schedule at http://www.reedcitycrossroads.com/tourism/festival/index.shtml).

Well-mannered, leashed dogs allowed if accompanied by adult • Alcohol not allowed at the facility • Free event • No need to bring items for caches

MORE ABOUT REED CITY

Reed City is at the crossroads of US-131 and US-10 in Osceola County (between Cadillac and Big Rapids and between Ludington and Clare). It's a beautiful place with plenty of parks, campgrounds, state forest, rivers, lakes and more nearby. We’re home to a yogurt factory (yum!) and home of the late author of “The Old Rugged Cross,” the well-loved church hymn. We're also right at the crossroads of two Rails-to-Trails, the Pere Marquette and the White Pine trail. If you're a nature lover, angler, hunter, photographer, or any casual-family-fun-kind-of-person, we think you'd enjoy a visit.

CAMPING IN THE AREA

Rambadt Park is owned by the city and is in the city limits. It's right on the rails-to-trails, connects to a linear park system, and is where many of the Great American Crossroads Celebration events will take place — and a short walk/bike to the rest of the events. Be sure to do the "2 Bridges" cache right there (GCCE1).

There several state forest rustic camp sites in nearby Lake County and one in Osceola County. Find them on the Michigan DNR web site.

Paris Park, 7 miles south, is a nice option.
