Geocache Description:

Englefield Enchantment

This cache is in the village of Englefield and is in two parts. The coordinates given are for the first part. You could park in the garden centre car park.  There is roadside parking for the second part, which is about one third of a mile from the church.

Englefield is an enchanting little village between Theale and Tidmarsh, just off the A340. It has a small Church of England Primary School, Village Stores and Post Office with a Tea Room, a Social Club, St Mark's Parish Church, a spattering of quaint cottages and houses and a grand Elizabethan mansion Englefield House, which has been used for film and television programme locations, Inspector Morse and Jeeves & Worster to name just a couple. The gardens of Englefield House are open to the public from 10am to 6pm on Mondays throughout the year, and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 April to 31 October inclusive. There is an admission fee of £3.00 per adult, children are free, unfortunately dogs are not allowed. You do not need to enter the gardens of Englefield House to complete this cache, however they are well worth a visit and would add to your enjoyment. The magnificent deer herd are a fantastic sight in themselves, and can often be seen from the drive which leads to the church and house. On days when the garden is open and on special occasions, cars are permitted through the ornamental gates and the private drive. If you use this route, you will see the garden centre car park on the right hand side as you approach the church. At other times, access is via the High Street, a turning about 400 yards from the lodge gates.

To obtain the coordinates for the final cache, you will first need to find the clue in the churchyard (N51:26:610 W001:06:223). The church is unlocked during the day and you can step inside and look around if you wish. Turn the handle anti-clockwise and then push the door. Take a look at the mosaic floor at the altar, and the very impressive reredos (altar screen) atop the altar.

To the left of the entrance to the church is a bench which has a plaque on it. The plaque states that the bench is a gift from the church congregation in memory of F W Lamperd, Church Warden from Year ABCD to Year EFGH. The coordinates for the second stage of the cache are

N51 2C C71, W001 0(D+1) CF5

which is to be found along a public footpath.

You are looking for a plastic rounded container covered in camo tape. It contains a logbook for you to sign, and an assortment of items for trading.
