Lake Shore One Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Vinny & Sue Team: Went to check on the cache this evening to find it gone. It wasn't close to deadfalls, just gone with a small pile of rocks left that once covered the cache. It's time to archive this one. Farewell Lake Shore One!

Geocache Description:

Cache is located in Cunnigham Falls State Park not far from a much-used lake. The cache is located not too far from a trail along the lakeshore. Any approach will require a bit of off-trail trekking thru the forest. Cache has been approved by DNR.

Located in wilderness area: poisonous plants, thorns and briars, snakes, ticks, ants, beavers, lizards, fox, coyotes, bears, bobcats, turtles and an occasional rabid groundhog or raccoon.

Warning: numerous tourists and park visitors, aka muggles, will be found at this park during weekends and holidays.

The cache is located in the William Houck area of Cunningham Falls state park. To get to the closest parking at N39 37.749 W77 27.652 proceed into the William Houck / Falls area of the park (entrance from Catoctin Hollow Rd) (entrance fee applies). Continue straight, passing 2 parking areas for the falls and lake beach until you reach the parking coords. The road loops around a picnic area at this point with parking at different points around the loop.

You can also take a little longer hike to the cache from the falls parking areas however this requires either a stream crossing (should be easy in summer but with higher water levels in other seasons you may get wet feet) or walking along the park road to cross the stream.

Not wheelchair accessible. Available only during park hours; not recommended at night. Most parking illegal at night. Camping and campfires may be allowed at designated locations in the state park; consult the state park website or brochure for details. An MD DNR webpage describing the park and regulations may be found at (visit link)

We are happy members of the Maryland Geocaching Society (aka MGS), which is a great group of cachers from Maryland and surrounding states. The many members of MGS offer great support for cachers, both old and new, and great advice on hiding and finding caches as well, and also plenty of local get-togethers where you can rub elbows with other local cachers. If you wish to learn more about MGS, please go to the MGS website at www.mdgps.com -- see you there!
Enjoy!
