Celestia Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

avalance: First off, I would like to thank the people at the Sullivan County Historical Society who supported me with this geocache. In the short time, it was up and running, there were over fifty logged visits on the Geocaching Web Site. There were visitors to Celestia from many different states including PA, NJ, MD, VA, WI, NC, IN, and AZ. Many local people also found this site because of the geocache and told me that they would have never known it was there without the geocache. In addition, many others who because of the geocache found this site, even if they did not log it on the site. Once I looked through the logbook, I counted over 125 different visitors. This included many families and one by a whole troop of boy scouts. I only counted that as one visitor. So, thanks to all the goecachers who found this site and thought it was interesting and informative. The cache is being archived because the Sullivan County Historical Society does not think it is appropriate anymore. I was unaware of the meeting and did not have a chance to present myself to them. A pair of archeologist accidentally found this cache while doing research at the site. They even signed the logbook! Apparently, they did not think it was appropriate for this site. And, that the site should be preserved. I agree with this and would have been happy to move the cache to a more appropriate place at the site. But, unfortunately, the only option the Historical Society gave me was to remove the cache completely. My only goal for this cache was to inform people about this fascinating and historical site.

Geocache Description:

Parking for this cache is located at N 41°25.366' W 076°31.471'. When you pull in there is a posted sign to your right and straight ahead. Please park here and do not park on the side of the road.

This cache is located at Celestia. Celestia was a small religious community back in the 19th century. This land was actually deeded to God from 1860 to 1872 by Celestia founder Peter Armstrong. The site is now owned by the Sullivan County Historical Society. Celestia is quite an interesting story, so I left some pamphlets for Celestia and for The Sullivan County Historical Society and Museum in the cache for any one who would like more information about this site. The pamphlets are free, you do not have to trade for them. Just take one.

The cache is only about 500' from the parking area. It can easily be reached most of the way, by following the mowed path. This cache was place with approval from The Sullivan County Historical Society.
