Geocache Description:

You will need to park on the shoulder of the road. The rating on the terrain is if you want to walk on the chert bed. It is made of Eroded rock steps and uneven sheets.

Grand Falls Chert Bed is a classic example of water erosion. Shoal Creek over thousands of years has eroaded the limestone that the harder chert was enbeded in. It is found in sheets and blocks at this location. Chert is made from Slicia and Oxygen and a few other things mixed in. Silica is the stuff that sand and glass are made of. This area was under a ancient sea. The chert was more than likely formed from tiny sea creatures shells or sponges that have Slicia in them. When they died the fell to the bottom of the sea and was over time covered by sea shell containing calcium. The pressure from all of the wieght pressing down formed rock over extreamly long peroid of time. The top layer being softer Limestone Rock and harder Chert below. The water has wore the limestone away to leave this formation of Chert. The lower wall of water drops over a solid sheet of Chert. These falls drop 15 feet to the stream below. This is the highest constant flowing waterfall in the state. The key word is CONSTANT flowing. There are taller falls in the state but do not flow all year. To the south of the falls is a sheet of Chert. It looks like a rock highway. This can be reached by the dirt trail to the left of the Chert blocks/step. This is a very short walk.

To log this earthcache, send a photo of you at the site, and or list the number of people in your party that visited. How many major steps are there in the falls? How many of the steps are made of chert?
