Along an EASY loop trail in Kahana Valley State Park. This should be a pretty easy cache to find. The overall elevation gain is only about 260 feet. Forget the bike business!
Take Kamehameha Highway on the Windward Coast to Kahana Valley State Park. Drive into the park and park at the following location: 21 33.021 N 157 52.893 W. From there walk into and thru the community, around a gate and up a paved road to the check-in station.
Same parking spot for my Pu`u O`Kila and Pu`u Pauao or Bust caches. Don't even think of doing more than one of these in a day!!! Stuart Ball describes this hike on page 209 of his "the Hikers Guide to O`ahu", revised edition.
When you reach the Hunter/Hiker check-in station go to the left for a few feet and then take the first right. This will take you in and out and in and out of a number of small valleys. Elevation is pretty constant. Most of the elevation gain to the cache comes from the parking area to the check-in station.
The cache container is well covered so please return it to that condition when you are finishe logging in. This is an area used by hikers and hunters so please cover it well so it will last.
Contents at the beginning are all items that cost 99 cents or less. Feel free to leave items of any value. Since it only takes about 1 hour to get to the cache it might be a good travel bug drop.
1-Log Book
2-3 x 5 Photo Frame
3-Krazy Glue Tube
4-Pack of Band-Aides
5-2 Orange Ping Pong Balls
6-Container of Tooth Picks
7-Package of Bobby Pins
8-Magnifying Glass
If you read Stuart's book he describes how to make this into a double loop shaped like a figure eight. This is a great easy loop of about 6 miles. If you do only the first half of the loop it's about 4 miles. Or you could double back the way you came and it's still about 4 miles. If you do either of the loops you'll wind up at a dam w/a GREAT swimming area just below the dam. The water is pretty deep and it is one of the best and easyest swimming fresh water spots on O`ahu to get to. Remember the rocks in the stream are slippery. You will have to walk in the stream if you do either the single or double loop. BE CAREFUL crossing the dam. It can be very slippery, and if the current is strong hard to keep your balance. If you walk in the stream just a few feet above the dam you'll find the crossing wetter, but less slippery.
Be safe and enjoy yourself.
