Caller Crag Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Caller Crag "the calf crag" is a prominent linear outcrop of Fell sandstone running from north east to south west. To the north of which is a narrow flat area that could have been useful for stock holding or settlement. A small cave in the north face of the cliff opens onto this.
I’ve lived around here for nearly 10 years and have never been to the Crags before, so to commemorate my first visit, I’ve hidden a cache.
It’s less than a mile to the Crags and the reward are some great views north wards towards the Cheviots and the coast. Also The rocks have been "carved" into many strange shapes, over the years by the wind and rain.
I’ve listed a couple of suggested parking places for this cache, but as usual you can decide this for your self, you may want a longer or slightly short walk.
A. Park on the B6341 below the crag at N 55 21.606 W 001 49.636
B. Park on the A697 at N 55 20.833 W 001 50.164 ( my route )
C. Park on the A697 above Wellhope at N 55 20.659 W 001 49.320
( for this one you walk down to the forest then through and along to the cache site. )
On the way to the Crags are the ruins of an old barn / house N 55 21.132 W 001 49.564. Here you can stop to get you breath and see the course of an old Roman road, Devil’s Causeway.
From the top you can see the Cheviot Hills to the north west, Thrunton woods to the west and Edlingham to the north.
I’ve attached a link to take you to the Northumbrian Rock Art web page which tells you all about the Crags and the rock formations etc.
TAKE CARE AT THE CACHE SITE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN WITH YOU, HIGH SLIPPERY ROCKS
