Another cache in the Blue Hills, great views from the top.
Finn hid this cache for Daddy for Father's Day. Daddy made the trip to the cache to get his stuff, so now the cache is open to everyone.
This is the first in a series of mommy/daddy-with-stroller friendly caches. There is paved access to all stages of the cache, with a minimal amount of non-paved walking required at the very beginning (about 200 feet on a gravel path) and at the end (about 30 feet, no bushwhacking required). There is convenient stroller parking for the final stage of the cache. To help new moms like myself lose those extra pounds, this cache is not a drive-by and requires some good exercise - about 2 miles round trip with significant elevation gain - about 400 vertical feet. There are several ways to get to the cache, but at least one way is paved. I'm reluctant to say the cache is wheelchair accessible because the last 30 feet or so is not paved (the gravel path at the beginning can be avoided by walking along the road).
This is a two stage cache. First coordinates take you to a place where you will see four plaques hanging above each other. Use the information on these plaques with the following formula to find the actual cache.
Final cache coordinates are 42N 12.ABC 71W 06.DEF
A = # of month on the third plaque down (Jan = 1, Feb = 2, ...)
B = # of times the letter B appears on the third plaque
C = last digit of the year on the second plaque
D = 2nd digit of the year on the second plaque
E = 3rd digit of the year on top plaque
F = # of words in the first three lines on the top plaque
Best place for parking is the north parking lot at the Trailside Museum on Route 138. There is a short gravel path from the north-east corner of the parking lot to the paved summit road.
Final notes - check out several caches elsewhere in the Blue Hills, visit the otters and hawks at the Trailside Museum, pick up a trail map at the Trailside Museum or Reservation Headquarters on Blue Hill River Road, and be sure to CITO.
