Crank Caverns Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Mars Bars: After speaking to Steve from "Carlos & the Birdie Crew" it seems that this cache has in actual fact been muggled.

The location is suffering from late night drinking sessions and other less than desirable pastimes of the local massive so I feel that I have no sensible alternative other than to archive it.

Cheers
Dave

Geocache Description:

Tucked away in a hollow, surrounded by woodland this mysterious place of local myth and folklore has many fascinating tales attached to it...
of "witch" (pun intended) none or all may be true.

These include secret escape tunnels leading from nearby Billinge church as an escape route for preists during the persecution.
Underground lakes, undergound churches, ghosts ghouls and goblins.

The main openings to the caverns are quite obviously man made.
It is known fact that the caverns were originally the site of a sandstone quarry operated by a Charles Howarth (Known colloquially as Yorkshire Charlie) in the mid 19th century.

During WW2 it is rumoured that the caverns were used as an ammunition dump and a safe place to hide some rather large guns.

Nowadays the main entrances to the caves are depressingly covered in Graffitti, such is the way of the world I'm affraid.

Park at small layby in Crank
(N53°29,488' W002°44.743') (SJ 50623 99677)

Enter the woods to the right of the private driveway entrance.
Continue down into the hollow to find the main cavern entrances.
The cache is not in a cave, it is hidden in a depression to the right of the cave entrances.

Please supervise children at all times, as there are some large drops both within the caves and the surounding area!
