These include secret escape tunnels leading from nearby Billinge
church as an escape route for preists during the persecution.
Underground lakes,undergound churches, ghosts ghouls and goblins.
The main openings to the caverns are quite obviously man
made.
It is known fact that the caverns were originally the site of a
sandstone quarry operated by a Charles Howarth (Known colloquially
as Yorkshire Charlie) in the mid 19th century.
During WW2 it is rumoured that the caverns were used as an
ammunition dump and a safe place to hide some rather large
guns.
Nowadays the main entrances to the caves are depressingly
covered in Graffitti, such is the way of the world I'm affraid.

Enter the woods to the right of the private driveway entrance.
Continue down into the hollow to find the main cavern
entrances.
The cache is not in a cave, it is hidden in a depression to the
right of the cave entrances.
Please supervise children at all times, as there are some
large drops both within the caves and the surounding area!
