Geocache Description:

Some history and a superb view. Short quick cache... although the drive isn't that quick....

"Rather barefoot over the Drakensberg than under the British flag"

These words were ushered in 1843 and thus started the Great Trek. The cache is placed near monuments marking some of the events of the era. On a clear day you will be entertained by one of the best views that you will get of the Northern Drakensberg range.


Follow the gravel road for Retief's Pass off the R74.

This is snake country, so take care before removing stones. There are some small stones to the right of the cache (if you are standing below it) which can be removed to gain access.


The cache is in a 2.6l waterproof container, and is protected with a green water resistant bag. Review and print these instructions to make sure you close the bag correctly so that it remains reasonably watertight.

Make sure to carry your binoculars and camera. Great views of the escarpment
