Town Name: Markey
Population: Approx. 100
Reason For Becoming a Lost Town: Another lumber town that
faded when the lumber ran out.
Town History: Named after real estate tycoon D.P.
Markey (who was once a speaker for the State House of
Representatives). In its heyday in 1917 it had three sawmills, a
meat markey, a feed mill, two hotels, and a general store. It also
had a population of 300 people. Post office ran from 1905 to 1933.
Few original houses exist and most of the homes were built in the
area are new. All that is left to remember the town is the
cemetary, Markey Rd. and a few foundations. The town was
located just south of the Markey Rd. and Lansing Rd.
intersection.
