Tunnel Park, Ottawa County MI. Near Holland State Park. Ammo box in wooded dune terrain. Rather short hike but maybe as much as 60 feet of elevation change.
Cache is located in a beautiful family orientated county park with a fabulous Lake Michigan beach. Park has large grassy area with lots of grills, a nice playground, four sand volleyball courts, restroom facilities, and two picnic pavilions, all of which are separated from the beach by a 50 to 75 ft tall sand dune. Through the dune is a tunnel connecting the two areas. This is one of a kind as far as I know. It was obviously built a long time ago when there was a whole different mindset about dune preservation. There are also stairs that go up, over and down the other side of the dune to the beach, and next to the stairs is a sand area to climb up and/or run down (I much prefer up the steps and down the sand hill). The beach on the other side is magnificent, as nice as they come, 100 yards of the most beautiful sand imaginable between the dune and Lake Michigan! There is a fee to drive into the park, if the guards are on duty (they often are not). Walking in is free. So, use the convenient free overflow parking just across the street at N 42 47.850 W086 12.387. The cache is in a ammo can in part of the park many visitors never realize is there. I’d been going here for years before becoming aware of the trails in this wooded dune area of the park. The cache is well away from all the restricted areas of the dunes (please be sure to stay out of the fenced off restricted areas so you don’t cause dune erosion). It is essentially on a trail. So, stay on the trails there’s no need to blaze a new path and remember dune environments are fragile. After finding the cache be sure to go a bit further to N 42 47.855 W086 12.585 for a sensational view and some a nice educational plaques. Before you leave don’t miss the main attraction, the tunnel through the sand dune, at N 42 47.937 W086 12.600. Again, please be sure to stay out of the restricted areas of the dune.

[Hint is a serious spoiler and short enough to decode in the field. So, why not try it without the hint first?]
