Jacks Pass is located on FS 65 Rd. near Skykomish. Excellent gravel
road takes you past many nice campspots and views along the N. Fk.
Sky River and Beckler River. Short walk of about .10 miles takes
you to a viewpoint and cache at 2720 ft. elevation. You won't need
to do any rock climbing. You are looking for a 50 cal ammo
box.
Nice area of logging roads with many miles of out of the way
locations to explore. You can access 2 ways and make a loop trip.
Take US 2 and turn off at Index and follow the Index-Galena road
past Troublesome Creek. Road is paved to about 4 miles past
Troublesome Creek and turns to excellent gravel. Follow the main
gravel road FS65 and cross the N Fork of the Skykomish River. Begin
climbing south to a 5 way junction at Jack Pass el 2580 ft. Find
the ditched road Rd 610 and follow this a short distance to a
gravel pit area and cache location. I see that 4x4's have been
crossing the ditched road, so proceed at your own risk. Lots of
shotgun shells and garbage in the gravel pit area, so no doubt why
the road is ditched. FS 65 is well travelled in the winter by 4x4's
and snowmobiles, so this road is often open year around in a light
snow year and makes a excellent snowshoe hiking area. I upped the
cache difficulty by one as you'll have to figure out how to extract
the cache once it's found. Please hide well.
At the 5 way junction Rd 65 continues south downhill following the
Beckler River and will come out on US 2 just east of Skykomish. If
you want to do the loop this way the turn off is at mile post 49.6
east of Skykomish near the Ranger Station. The road is signed
Beckler River Rd.
Update: 3/19/09 I see I failed to update this cache. The road
coming in from Index. Index-Galena Rd was destroyed in floods, so
the only access to this cache is via FS 65 up the Beckler River Rd.
near Skykomish. This would make a nice snowshoe hike. The state is
plowing FS 65 over Jacks Pass for the home/cabin owners, so this
opens up a vast area of winter access.
