Local Town of Wheatland history lesson.
Joseph Cox operated a ferry here from 1820 to 1830. He was authorized by the "Court of Common Pleas, Genesee County, NY" to charge 6.25 cents for each footman. A horse and rider would run you 12.5 cents. If you had two horses, a wagon and a driver it was going to set you back a whopping 18.5 cents!
In 1830, Ira Carpenter built a covered wooden bridge which was used until 1870 when it was replaced by a cast iron truss bridge. The current structure, completed in 1999, is the fifth version to span the river.
Depending on the time of year be sure to wear bug spray and beware of the poison ivy.
