Storm Mountain Multi-Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
To prevent archiving and relisting this cache, it has been
changed to a multi-cache but originally listed as
regular.
To access this cache head west on Hwy 34, turn north-west (right)
on Country RD 43 near drake, and make the first right (north) onto
FS Road 128 (Storm Mtn). Stay on FS 128 as to not venture into
private property, the road is well marked so you will be able to
find your way.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL IN THE COMING YEARS DUE TO THE
BEETLE KILL TREES, THEY ARE GETTING TO THE POINT OF FALLING AND
COULD AT ANY TIME!! This is a seasonal access geocache. Only
accessable during June through December (maybe).
KNOWLEDGE OF UTMs WOULD HELP IN FINDING THIS GEOCACHE. THE SECOND
STAGE MAY REQUIRE USE OF THEM SHOULD YOU SO DESIRE.
One can complete the second stage before ever leaving their home
base and confirm their guess before trying on their own. Knowledge
of How to use
UTM's and Maps &
Compasses can be useful to find this cache..
Footnotes on Compasses:
When using a compass in the field, it is very important to be
careful when taking the measurement and when converting between
field and map bearings. An error of five degrees in reading
accuracy will result in a position error of about 150 yards after
one mile of travel.
East Declination: The declination is East (9.5°) thus magnetic
north is greater than true north the map bearing is greater than
the field bearing. You need to make the two worlds equivalent by
adding or subtracting the declination.
- Map Bearing to Magnetic Bearing: If you are taking a
bearing from one point on your map to another point on the map with
respect to true north, then you are working with the map bearing.
Now you want to figure out where your position is in the magnetic
bearing. In order to transfer this information back to your
magnetic bearing you need to subtract the declination from your map
bearing compass bearing to create the proper magnetic bearing
bearing. Map bearing - Declination = Magnetic Bearing.
- Magnetic Bearing to Map Bearing: If you use your compass
to take a bearing from your current position to a point on the
landscape, then you are working with the magnetic bearing. Now you
want to figure out where your position is on the map. In order to
transfer this information back to your map you need to add the
declination from your magnetic bearing compass bearing to create
the proper map bearing. Magnetic bearing + Declination = Map
Bearing.
***VIRTUAL TRAVEL BUGS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THIS CACHE***
***Regular Travel bugs are welcome any time***
An ATV or MODIFIED high clearance vehicle is required
because you will not be able to get your passenger car any further
into the area than the Galuchie Park (Meadow) area. A stock jeep
could do this if you know what you're doing and have a spotter, but
there is a reason that this is a five star cache. You can certainly
hike this but be prepared for a good nine mile round trip workout
from where you'd have to park your car.
Before you begin the small climb to the scenic overlook you'll see
trail 153 which makes a hard left (approx N40 29.041 W105 23.516),
you will want to turn left to access the geocache. 153 also spurs
left about 200' down the trail, keep right and you'll be on the
right track.
The view from the reloacted cache is even better than the first
location and well worth the trip so bring a lunch and your camera.
This is one of those spots that you don't see everyday, and you
have a clear view of Estes Park, a practically clear view to
Wyoming and Kansas, and full digital signal on your cell
phone.
When you arrive at the main coordinates/parking area (464105mE
4484288mN) project a map bearing (TN) of 26 degrees for approx 300
meters.
For further confirmation/triangulation of the cache container
location project 188 degrees TN for approx 1180 meters from X9010;
and 330 degrees TN for approx 615 meters from X9875.
Anyone needing topo maps with 500M UTM grid can feel free to
contact myself via email. We'll figure out how to get you the
maps.
