The Mendocino National Forest has some spectacular vistas from its mountain tops, something a cacher will have witnessed if they've done GCHX56 or GCKDBA. In the spirit of those two fine caches, I've placed this cache upon Sanhedrin Mountain where you can see all the way to the ocean to the west, Mount St. Helena to the south, Snow Mountain to the east, and Covelo and beyond to the north.
Heading north from the Soda Creek Resort you'll reach a summit in the M-1 road and a road to the left that takes you up to Sanhedrin Mountain. The road up isn't bad until you're about three miles into Louisiana-Pacific land. By this point you're pretty familiar with what a ponderosa pine/douglas-fir plantation looks like, planted after the Mendenhall Fire Complex of '87. A low-clearance vehicle can make it but will likely be plowing a few rocks out of the road in the process. By the time you're nearing the summit you'll reach an alpine meadow of corn lillies. From here on the road gets truly nasty, especially in the sense of scratching up the vehicle paint job (imagine thorny shrubs creating nails-on-chalkboard noises with your car). If you don't mind, forge on. If you do, get out and make the short hike up to the remnants of the Big Signal Lookout at Sanhedrin Mountain. Please do not enhance the poor condition of the site thanks to vandals. Find the cache (.50 caliber ammo can with Hoobastank CD, Hunt for Red October VHS movie and the usual goodies), find the surviving benchmark (KT1968) and enjoy the vistas, but look at the damage to the old lookout (vintage 1961) and do your part to leave the mountain top more pristine that you found it. Look at Hull Mtn. to the east and realize there's another cache to be had there (GCKDB7) with an even better view. Enjoy!
