Near to the old Racourse Grandstand locally the course is known as the Gallops
A nice easy walk, good drainage for all weathers.Horses train around the area, good dog walking but be aware of those horses and keep mainly to the side paths.
Horse racing in Richmond is recorded as early as 1576.The racing moved to this course in 1765 with the last race held in 1891, it is still used for training. The grandstand was erected in 1775 believed to be designed by John Carr and was still standing complete in 1945.That was until vandals in the shape of Richmond Corporation removed the lead from the roof of the grandstand which then deteriorated rapidly. In 1969 despite being a listed building they began to pull it down.Being prevented in completing their tasks by 3rd Marquess of Zetland. In 1989 it was made a building at risk by English Heritage, we await further developments but are not holding our breath.
