A walking multi-cache around some points of interest in the Harlow
Hill area of Harrogate. This is a walk of under two miles and
should take most geocachers an hour or so to complete. Harlow Hill
is the highest point in Harrogate at 600ft and offers good
panoramic views over the town and on a clear day to distant
landmarks like York Minster to the East and the White Horse of
Kilburn to the North East - both over 20 miles away.

The above co-ordinates are not for the final cache location but for
the recommended parking on Plantation Road, which is just off the
B6162 Otley Road, at the summit of the hill. Alternatively
you can take the number 106 (Pannal Ash) bus service from Harrogate
Bus Station and alight at the Plantation Road stop - this service
currently runs every 20 minutes in the daytime and hourly on
Sundays. You can also take the 1.5 mile walk up from
Harrogate through the Valley Gardens, and then through the Pine
Woods.

You should
be facing the B???K memorial.
The number of open pillars in the memorial =
A
Waypoint 2 - 53° 58.777' N 1° 34.000' W
Originally a
country house, this stone building became the director's offices
for the former Central Electricity Generating Board offices who
occupied the modern building behind. Its use has changed
again and it is now associated with a wild
animal.
The number of disabled parking bays = B
Waypoint 3 - 53° 58.829' N 1° 33.790' W
Dudley Hill
is an area of Bradford, so its reference here is a little
surprising, although Bradford was an important trade centre of the
woollen industry in previous centuries, so this may give some idea
of the age of this item.
The sum of the whole numbers = CD
Waypoint 4 - 53° 58.880' N 1° 33.560' W
This is one
of the two oldest buildings remaining on Harlow Hill, and it
features an interesting stable block which indicates its origins as
a coaching inn.
The total number of full chimney pots = E
Waypoint 5 - 53° 58.903' N 1° 33.652' W
Formerly
known as Panorama Walk, this access road was strangely given a much
plainer name in recent years, the original name is appropriate for
the panoramic views across Harrogate and beyond. Sit back and
admire the views for a while.
The day in August = FG
Waypoint 6 - 53° 58.977' N 1° 33.722' W
These two
buildings are distinctive historical landmarks - the older one is
the former 90ft tall Harlow Hill Observatory which had a dome until
it was sold and subsequently converted into a private house in the
1980s (please keep to the roadway, do not trespass). The
Observatory, built in 1829, was open to the public after being
acquired by Harrogate Corporation in 1926 - who added the
dome. The other building is also distinctive, but rather
newer and serves multiple purposes beyond its original function -
including the transmissions for the local radio
station.
The newer building was constructed in = HJKL
The final
cache is a 0.5 litre tupperware style container (original contents -
logbook/pencil/sharpener, battery tester, calculator, steel rule,
Elephant keyring, toy Porsche, carabiner, 1 Swedish Krone, 10
Spanish Pesetas and 5 South African Rand) and is located
at:
Waypoint 7 -
53° (B-G)(J+K).H(F+L)D'
N 1° (C+F)(G+L).AL(E/F)'
W
The cache is hidden close to
open ground but just under trees so difficult to get a good GPS fix
- you may need to use the clue.
