The developer of Northbrook Court wasn’t originally planning to build a shopping center. His plan called for 2300 apartments in 12-story high rises. Northbrook opposed the plan and the developer, fearing a time-consuming court battle offered Northbrook an alternative. His proposal to build a shopping center and small office complex resulted in Northbrook’s annexation of the land. The 150 homeowners in the subdivision southeast of the development were against the change from residential to commercial zoning, so the developer donated a parcel of land to the Northbrook Park District as a buffer zone. The mall opened in 1976 and the buffer zone became Williamsburg Square Park.
