A beautiful old church and cemetery
From 1812 to 1832 McKendree people worshipped in the log cabin home of Samuel and Malinda Mitchell, which was located just east of the church on a small spring creek. In 1832 a frame church was built. In 1838 the Mitchell's deeded this land to the Methodist Episcopal church. In 1853 the frame church was moved to New Carlisle and occupied as a residence and this brick church was built the same year. Included among those pioneer families attending McKendree church were the Black and Stafford families who had traveled with the Mitchells from Virginia aririving in 1805.
The farm to the north and west of the church is still owned and operated by a Mitchell, a fourth great grandson, the 2nd oldest family owned farm in the state.
The Mitchell family held a reunion (Bicentennial) at the farm on June 26, 2005. Around 100 people attended from as far away as New York, California and Florida.
