Geocache Description:

This is a bit more history around the Ft. Shaw area. As a young school girl (Bernie) remembers going on a picnic the last day of school and visiting the cemetery. A family friend always said he wanted to be buried in the cemetery, as he thought his plot "would drain well" given it was on high ground above the Sun River. Unfortunately burials ceased before his passing. It is a short drive west of the old Fort. Small container with log, pencil and small trade items.

The Fort Shaw Military Cemetery was established in the spring of 1867. It was plotted out in a circle some 55 feet across as the central feature. In addition to burial plots around the circle, two rows, running north to south were on the west and east of the circle. The circle and west rows were for the military and dependents. The east rows were for civilains. The first burial was in 1867, Chris Nelson, a civilain employee of the Army. A total 117 burials were made by the Army prior to base closer in 1891. In 1894 the government removed and reburied some 75 military personnel in other cemeteries in Montana. During the time Indian School was in existence 39 students and several teachers were buried within the miliary section. After 1950 no burials were made in the cemetery. Two individuals, Herb Sharpe and Bob Thoroughman began restoration in 1984, including rebuilding the irrigation system that was a part of the Fort's Army Ditch. The marking of graves is an ongoing project which include those of seven soldiers whose remains were left at the cemetery in 1894. "Sun River Historical Society"
