Geocache Description:

The McAdams family farm stretched from Jim Town at what is now Hampton Road to the town of Sparks around Illinois Avenue and I 45. N.O. McAdams was sheriff of Dallas during the Civil War years of 1862 - 1866. In 1867, all Democrats who were holding offices in the State from Governor down, including those of each county, were removed by military order as impediments to Reconstruction. Then, in the first election after Reconstruction in 1873, McAdams was elected Chief Justice of Dallas County where he served until 1876. He ran for, and won, a seat as County Commissioner where he served until he died in 1892.

His son, Thomas A. McAdams, continued to run the farm until his death in 1912. By this time, Dallas was progressing southward and the farm, along with Jim Town, was annexed by Dallas in 1923. N.O.'s grave was destroyed by time and pollution many years ago but Thomas' is right up front when you enter the cemetery.

Be careful driving to the cemetery. If you turn the wrong way off Illinois, you could end up on the entrance ramp to I 35 instead of Brookhaven Drive. Taking Ohio Street off Zang Blvd. is better. Good luck!
