Geocache Description:

When finished at Ely, MN, this trail will be the longest paved trail in the USA. The TOWER-SOUDAN HISTORICAL MUSEUM IS BEING ESTABLISHED IN THE OLD TRAIN DEPOT. I WILL DELETE AND SPOILERS-LOGS or PICTURES- THAT INDICATE EXACTLY WHERE THE CACHE IS LOCATED. Snow depth in winter may prevent access to cache.

Cache container is a peanutbutter jar. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE FOOD OR LIGHTERS IN THE CONTAINER.

I brought you here to learn some things about this city’s history.

1. THE MCKINLEY MONUMENT- built 2 weeks after Pres. McKinley died from assassination in 1901. It is the tall gray obelisk. The Sup. of the Soudan Mine at the time was a close friend of Pres. McKinley. There is more to read on the monument.

2. THE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE- At the site, read about how this connected to Tower in 1910.

3. THE ORE CRUSHER – Located by the flags (representing the ethnic groups who settled in the area)- The plaque will explain the ore crusher and tell you more about Tower, which became a city in 1889.

4. THE HOMESTEAD CABIN - which belonged to William Oates Jeffery from Cornwall, England in the early days of the city.

5. THE IRON ORE BAR- after you have found the cache- go to the 3-storied gray poured concrete building you see across the bridge. This building held the IRON RANGE BREWERY until it closed in 1929. The building was used to cool the beer. During the summer ice was packed to the top of the building to maintain cooling during the summer. Now you can go into the first floor bar and see that the bar itself is constructed of white quartz, pyrite (Fool’s Gold – if you have been to my Au/FeS2 cache, you will know how this “Fool’s Gold” was taken for real gold back in the first days of mineral exploration), and high-grade ore samples from the area. The bar does have non-alcoholic drinks.
