Geocache Description:

This cache is in a great spot for fat-tire bikers, casual hikers, or even equestrians! You can visit the area any time of year and it is never crowded. Take a short one mile bike ride up the easy hill to get the cache and then ride on as far as you want! This route is suitable for all but the youngest cachers. Bring a picnic and check out the giant old rail trestle while you are here. Park open during daylight hours only! Camera added in Sept. 2008!

The Banks-Vernonia State Trail is the first “rails-to-trails” state park built in Oregon. It was developed on an abandoned railroad bed stretching between Banks and Vernonia. The trail features 12 bridges and includes an eight-foot-wide hiking and bicycle trail paralleled by a four-foot-wide horse trail.

The gentle grade allows hikers, bicyclists, equestrians and people of all abilities to enjoy the scenic mountains, fields and forests of Washington and Columbia counties. The trail from end to end is about 20 miles in length.

For more information and a map of the trail and entry points, go to the official Oregon State Parks website: (visit link)

The cache is located about a mile from the Buxton trailhead, so it is an easy bike ride or a nice long walk if you prefer. You are looking for a 10 x 10 inch plastic camo container that is well hidden off the main trail at one of the “rest stops.” As the title of the cache hints, the location is near milepost 12.75. Please tell us about your outing in the electronic log when you report this cache and remember to hide it well! And take a picture with the newly added camera (Sept. 2008).

The Buxton trailhead parking lot is located at:
North: 45 – 41.909
West: 123 – 11.007
Elevation: 447 feet

There is a newly marked County Monument along the trail, shortly before you arrive at the cache.:
North: 45 – 42.463
West: 123 – 11.156
Elevation: 541 feet

Be sure to bring a snack and drinking water in summer. Dogs are OK too as long as they are on leash at all times and can go the distance! Be aware that the park is closed at night and you can be cited for entering after dusk! This section of the trail is mostly shaded all the way to Tophill (elevation 920 feet), so it’s a great summer ride. Watch out for poison oak and bees throughout the park.

Note that we obtained express permission from the park ranger to place this one cache for a limited time with restrictions and that the park has not been opened for unrestricted cache placement. Please honor these restrictions so we can hopefully be able to place other caches here in the future.
